Here’s our breakdown of the cheapest online supermarkets, including how much your online food shop needs to be before you qualify for delivery and exactly how much the delivery fees are. 

From Tesco and ASDA to Sainsbury’s and Morrisons, figuring out which is the cheapest supermarket for delivery can save you a lot of money long-term. 

The average weekly food cost for a typical UK household is around £103, up approximately 18% from last year. With the cost of living crisis seeing students left with just 50p a week to live on after rent, and many students skipping meals to cut back on spending, it’s clear just how vital it is for millions across the country to find the cheapest options out there when it comes to food shopping. 

So without further ado, here’s all the info you need to make an informed decision and shop wisely…

Does Aldi do home delivery?

First things first, unfortunately Aldi doesn’t currently offer a home delivery service for groceries. That being said, if you live nearby, Aldi is one of the cheapest supermarkets in the UK (beaten only by Lidl) and offers a handy click and collect service, meaning you can place your order in advance and simply pick it up at your chosen time. 

This is great if you don’t necessarily need to have your groceries delivered and can make use of the collection service, as you’ll still be able to take advantage of just how cheap it is. 

Does Lidl do home delivery?

Lidl is officially the cheapest supermarket in the UK, however it currently doesn’t offer home delivery or a click and collect service, so you can only really benefit from this if you live near a local branch. 

Again, if having your groceries delivered is a necessity for you, you’ll have to give Lidl a miss unfortunately! 

How much is ASDA delivery?

Now for the cheapest supermarket delivery in 2023!

ASDA is by far one of the cheapest supermarkets for delivery and actually has the UK’s cheapest supermarket delivery passes. 

Here’s everything you need to know about ASDA home delivery:

• Delivery from as little as £1 

• You must spend at least £40 or you’ll incur an extra £3 charge 

• You can get an online delivery pass from just £3.50 per month if you opt for midweek deliveries (or a one-off payment of just £35 per year), or you can pay £6.50 per month for anytime deliveries (or a one-off payment of £65 per year)

Remember, you can also save even more at ASDA with your TOTUM Cashback card, earning 2.5% back on every purchase. If your average weekly food shop is £60, that’s £1.50 back into your account each time! 

How much is Tesco delivery?

Tesco is another superb choice for cheap supermarket delivery, but works out more costly overall than ASDA due to both the minimum spend and delivery fees being higher. 

The higher minimum spend may not be an issue for you though if you’re doing a group food shop as part of a houseshare!

Here’s what you need to know about Tesco home delivery:

• Delivery from £3 (on average between £3-£7)

• From May 2023, you must spend at least £50 or you’ll incur an extra £5 charge

• You can subscribe to Tesco’s Delivery Saver which includes both 6-month and 12-month from as little as £3.99 for off-peak deliveries or £6.99 for anytime deliveries 

How much is Iceland delivery?

Iceland is known for its affordability - particularly on the frozen food front - but did you know it’s also by far one of the cheapest supermarkets for delivery?

Here’s everything you need to know about Iceland home delivery:

• Delivery is FREE as long as you spend £40

• You’ll pay a £3 delivery fee on orders under £40, and there’s a minimum spend of £25

• There are no delivery pass options, however Bonus Card holders can get free same-day delivery on orders over £20! 

How much is Morrisons delivery?

Another great option when looking for the cheapest supermarket delivery is Morrisons. 

Here’s the lowdown on Morrisons home delivery:

• Delivery costs as little as £1.50

• Minimum spend is just £25

• You can get a delivery pass from £5 per month for midweek deliveries (or £40 for the year) or £8 per month for anytime deliveries (£70 annually)

How much is Sainsbury’s delivery?

Sainsbury’s is another supermarket included in the TOTUM Cashback card, meaning you can earn 3.5% back each time you shop! We love an instant way to save money.

• Delivery from just £1 if you book a Saver Slot (a 4-hour delivery window)

Does M&S deliver food?

While M&S doesn’t directly offer a food delivery service, you can get everything from everyday M&S staples to frozen goods via Ocado! 

The popular retailer has partnered with Ocado, giving customers a way to have their favourite M&S goods delivered directly to their door.

So, how does Ocado work and how much is delivery?

Essentially, you can order food from a variety of different brands - including M&S - with delivery times starting from as early as 5.30am until midnight! 

Here’s what you need to know about Ocado home delivery…

• Delivery starts from as little as 99p but may go up to £6.99 depending on slot availability

• The minimum spend is quite steep at £75 - if you don’t spend this much, you’ll receive a minimum charge of £2.99 and a maximum of £6.99

• You can sign up to Ocado’s Smart Pass service from £3.99 per month for midweek deliveries which allows you to save up to 10% on big brands AND gets you free delivery

Up until very recently (October 2023), Aldi remained the cheapest supermarket for a basket of groceries every month this year, however Lidl has just taken the crown as the cheapest UK supermarket according to Which. 

Of the ‘big four’ supermarkets - Tesco, Sainsbury’s, ASDA and Morrisons - ASDA claims the title as the cheapest supermarket.

So, you know how to find the cheapest supermarket delivery and you’ve got your 2023 supermarket price comparison, but how else can you cut costs on your online food shopping?

Here are some simple, easy ways to save as you shop… 

1. Cashback schemes

As we’ve mentioned, the new TOTUM Cashback card is a fantastic way to save money on your food shopping both in-store and online! 

ASDA, Sainsbury’s and M&S are just three participating retailers, helping you to earn 6% (Av) back each time you spend. 

2. First-time shopper discounts

If you’re placing a food shop online for delivery for the first time, keep your eyes peeled for a first-time shopper discount. 

Many supermarkets offer money off or some form of reward for downloading and making a purchase with their app for the first time too, so make sure to double check before you order!

The Tesco Clubcard in particular is considered one of the best out there, and you can now subscribe to Clubcard Plus to make even bigger savings.

4. Purchase a delivery pass

If you frequently do your online food shopping with one supermarket, purchasing a delivery pass will inevitably save you money over time. 

If you can purchase an annual pass (remember you can split the cost with your housemates/family members), this is usually the best value! 

5. Opt for off-peak delivery slots

You may have noticed that off-peak supermarket delivery works out the cheapest, with midweek delivery passes being the most affordable. 

If you can work your food shop deliveries around your uni/work schedule and bag yourself a midweek slot rather than booking for peak times such as weekends, you’ll make big savings in the long run. 

6. Do joint food shops with housemates/family members to reach minimum spend 

If there’s one thing we find frustrating about online food shopping, it’s the extra charges you incur if you don’t reach the minimum spend. 

If you usually do food shops just for yourself, these extra charges for failing to meet the minimum spend can really add up over time. So if possible, we’d always advise you to do joint online food shops with either your housemates or family members to help you meet those minimum spend thresholds and keep delivery costs as low as possible.

This one is great not only for your pockets but for the planet too. We’d strongly recommend getting yourself some reusable bags to avoid incurring the cost of plastic bags when having your online food shop delivered.
