Halloween is the perfect time to explore your inner thrill seeker, especially if you have a particular penchant for the paranormal, and what better way to do this than by spending the night in a haunted Airbnb?
From eerie castles to ghostly cottages, the UK offers a wide range of spooky stays with a history of unexplained phenomena…
Here are just a handful of places you can stay this year that have a reputation for being some of the most haunted Airbnbs in the UK!
The Haunted Bedroom at Talliston
The Haunted Bedroom at Talliston is an eerie and enchanting space located within Talliston House, also known as ‘Britain's most extraordinary home’. Decorated in Scottish Art Nouveau style, this room recreates in nightmarish detail the bed chamber of a seven-year-old Edwardian child complete with books, toys and ephemera.
Low lit in period wall lighting and candles, you’ll instantly feel like you’ve been transported to a whole different era, with timeworn wooden beams and antique furnishings only adding to the room’s overall creepiness. Guests who dare to stay the night may experience inexplicable chills in the air, unexplained sounds, and perhaps even ghostly apparitions, making it an unforgettable journey into the paranormal…
The Chamber Apartment, York
Ever fancied spending the night in a 600-year old apartment where ghosts are believed to roam the halls? If so, The Chamber Apartment in York will no doubt take your fancy. Located in the most haunted city in Europe, The Trembling Madness Apartment is renowned for its unnatural activity, with previous guests hearing peculiar noises during their stay including the sound of ghostly babies crying in the night!
Caverswall Castle, Staffordshire
Caverswall Castle is a historic gem located in Staffordshire just a stone’s throw away from the Alton Towers theme park. The castle, dating back to the 17th century, exudes an air of mystery that has intrigued visitors for generations. Many guests and paranormal enthusiasts have reported spine-tingling encounters with the supernatural within its stone walls. From disembodied voices and phantom footsteps echoing through the hallways to chilling apparitions and inexplicable cold spots, Caverswall Castle is a hotspot for ghostly activity.
If you’re ready and raring to brave a stay at the castle, you can book via Airbnb for a group of up to 16 people!
Attic at the Old Manor House, Whitby
This creepy attic in Whitby was formerly the servants’ quarters in the Old Manor House and has hosted many guests over the years thanks to its proximity to Whitby Abbey, the place that inspired Bram Stoker to write Dracula.
Mary Queen of Scot’s Chamber at Neidpath Castle
Perhaps one of the coolest places you can rent via Airbnb, Neidpath Castle in the Scottish Borders is where Mary Queen of Scots visited in 1563 when she was 22 years old and has a reputation for being haunted. Stories of ghostly apparitions and strange occurrences have long circulated, with one of the most famous ghostly residents being Jean, the daughter of Sir William Douglas who owned the castle in the late 17th century.
Jean fell in love with the son of the Laird of Tushielaw, however he was not considered to be of high enough birth to be a suitable match for Jean. After he was sent away, Jean is believed to have spent months watching from the castle, praying for his return. Her health rapidly deteriorated, so much so that when he did one day return, he did not recognise her and rode past the castle without acknowledging her. This was too much for Jean to take, and she died of a broken heart.
The ghostly figure of a woman wearing a long brown dress with a large white collar has been sighted walking the castle ramparts, leading many to believe Jean still haunts the castle to this day.
