Gilmore Girls Creator Hints The Show Could Be Returning

With autumn well and truly upon us, those dark evenings drawing in and the urge to cosy-up on the sofa with a hot chocolate looming large, there’s no denying it’s Gilmore Girls season!  

A classic, comforting pick for the the autumn and winter, the series, which initially ran for seven seasons from October 2000 to May 2007 has never really fallen far from screens. 

On the very vague off-chance that you’ve never seen the show, Gilmore Girls is set in Stars Hollow, Connecticut, and follows the stories  of mother and daughter Rory and Lorelai Gilmore as they experience the loves, losses, trials and tribulations of life in picturesque small-town America.  

With its quirky characters, quaint backdrops, fast-paced script and never-ending personal dramas, the show has become an absolute cult-classic, with the on-again, off-again romantic involvement between local diner owner Luke Danes (Scott Patterson) and Lorelai a brilliantly compelling thread to keep you hooked throughout. 

Despite ending its original run in 2007, the show was resurrected by Netflix as a miniseries back in 2016 in the form of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, and while this may have seemed like Lorelai and Rory had bid farewell forever, that might not be the case… 

Creator Amy Sherman-Palladino has opened up about a possible return for the show.

“The thing about families is they never work their s**t out. They are dysfunctional forever and because of that, it’s the best possible way to come up with stories because you will never solve your problems there,” she told Rolling Stone.

Amy explained she’d like to revisit Lane’s story (played by Keiko Agena). She added: “I really never liked the way Lane’s life shook out. I would have liked to have spent more time on her.

“I think it would be interesting to see a baby and a kid and what that next Gilmore Girl round would be.”

Back in 2020, Amy spoke about the future of the show four years after the Netflix specials were released.

During an interview with Vogue, she said: “We didn't go in there with any intention of wanting to do more. There were no discussions between us and Warners or us and Netflix of having anymore.

"We all went through this journey thinking we just wanted to make it a very special event."

However, she went on to offer a glimmer of fresh hope when talking to Entertainment Tonight, saying: "You know, it's the kind of thing where we hadn't planned on doing the Netflix movies... never say never."

Amy added: "It would just have to be the right time for everybody. 'Cause it was [in 2016].”
